Gold karats: the difference between 24k, 22k, 21k, and 18k
The karat tells you how much pure gold the alloy contains. Higher karat means greater purity and a higher price, but softer metal. These are the karats in common circulation; the price factor is the number you multiply the pure-gold price by to get that karat's price:
| Karat | Gold content | Price factor | Common use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24k | 99.9% | 1.000 | Investment bars and coins |
| 22k | 91.6% | 0.916 | Gulf and Indian jewellery |
| 21k | 87.5% | 0.875 | The most traded karat in Arab markets |
| 18k | 75.0% | 0.750 | Stone-set jewellery |
| 14k | 58.5% | 0.585 | Western jewellery and watches |
Example: if 24k gold is 300 per gram, then 21k = 300 × 0.875 = 262.5 and 18k = 300 × 0.750 = 225. The dashboard above runs this calculation automatically for every karat in your local currency.
Gold weights: gram, ounce, and tola
Gold is priced globally in troy ounces, while jewellery is sold by the gram across most Arab markets. These are the conversions you need:
- 1 troy ounce = 31.1035 grams — the global pricing unit for gold (XAU), distinct from the ordinary ounce of 28.35 grams.
- 1 kilogram = 1,000 grams = 32.1507 troy ounces.
- 1 tola = 11.664 grams — widely used across the Gulf and the Indian subcontinent.
- The gold pound (guinea) = 8 grams, usually minted in 21k in Egypt and 22k in Saudi Arabia.
To turn the global price into a local per-gram price: divide the ounce price by 31.1035, multiply by your exchange rate, then multiply by the karat factor. The dashboard above performs all three steps for you.
What moves the gold price?
Your local gold price comes from two things at once: the global dollar price per ounce, and your currency's exchange rate against the dollar. That is why the price can rise where you are while the global price stays flat.
- The US dollar — usually an inverse relationship: a weaker dollar lifts the dollar-denominated gold price.
- Interest rates — higher rates make yield-bearing assets more attractive than gold, which pays no income, and weigh on its price.
- Inflation and instability — investors move into gold as a safe haven when inflation rises or geopolitical tension increases.
- Central bank buying — among the largest sources of demand, and more influential on the long-term trend than any single day's move.
- Seasonal demand — wedding seasons and religious holidays lift jewellery demand across Arab and Indian markets.
