Pixels or percent? When to use each option
Use pixels when a platform demands an exact size — an Instagram post at 1080×1080 or a Facebook cover at 820×312 — since exact numbers prevent surprise auto-cropping. Use percent when you want a proportional shrink without arithmetic: 50% halves width and height together and keeps the composition intact, fastest for batch-preparing photos for email or archive.
And separate image resolution from display size: a 4000-pixel-wide photo inside a 400-pixel blog column burns your visitors' data for zero visual gain. The practical web rule: export at twice the maximum displayed width (for Retina screens), then compress the file — no more.
Downscaling sharpens, upscaling guesses
Reducing dimensions is a "clean" operation: it drops surplus pixels and keeps the image sharp. Enlarging cannot add detail that is not there — the browser interpolates the new pixel values, so the image gets softer the more you enlarge. If you need a large print version, the high-resolution original is the answer, not upscaling the web copy: a good-quality A4 print needs about 2480×3508 pixels (at 300 DPI).
Hence one simple rule: always keep the original file at full resolution and resize copies only. Downscaling is irreversible within the file itself — discarded pixels never come back.
